Audi won all seven Touring Car championships one year - 1997?
Although we focus on the banning of AWD because they were winning,
let's not forget that Audi was banned from using its five-valve
technology in touring cars right from the very beginning because none
of the other manufacturers had anything competitive with it.
One of the reasons Audi withdrew was that they were running out of time
left on the certification of thier engine, and were shipping engines to
high street customers in higher states of tune than they were allowed
to use on race tracks.
Jaochim Winkelhoch, the WMB driver at the time, once said that Biela
could have won towing a trailer. Biela pointed out that the ballast
in the car when he won his last race weighed the same as his wife and
their two small children.
How long before Audi gets banned from Le Mans?
