Hurley Haywood said when they showed up for the first trans am race, the
competition laughed at their Audis. By mid season (and getting their but
kicked) the competition was begging for a rule change. Again, like the kids
on their home playground, they kicked out the newcomers so the home town boys
could continue to play in their world by their rules. I just finished
reading the book DRIVING FORCES, a book about the prewar German Gran Prix
racers. The last chapter relates to how the superior German race cars and
their technology was not even acknowledged by the American automotive
community. The book is pretty good - its more about the drivers and their
lives than the cars - but it is enlightening.
