Nascar press conference Is: Quattro in racing

They, like all of their competitors run on DOT "R" compound tires.
Competition tires that meet DOT safety requirements (i.e. MUCH heavier
than slicks). You can buy BFG's, Yokohama, Hoosier and Kumho competion
tires from Tire Rack (they'll even heat cycle them for a fee, worth it if
you want them to "last" (being euphamistic here, they'll go, at best,
about 2 to 3 K miles of street running)). Don't know where to buy the
Toyo's, but there are sources for Goodyear R-rated Eagles in the back of
Grassroots Motorsports in the classifieds. Just about every major brand
availible in the US has R compound tires, but not all of them are easily
availible. You could check the local Toyo dealer to see if you could get
those tires though, but I'd bet they are at a premium. BTW, BFG intends
to get out of the R-compound tire business very soon. Too bad. But the
others will happily fill the void. Note, no one tire has seemed too
dominant at the regional level of SCCA Autocross or SCCA Club racing, so,
if you want to try it, use sizing and your wallet as a guide (okay, in my
experience, the RE-71 S and RE-71 R were not up to the performance of the
other R compound tires. Also the Yok A32R is NOT a full fledged race
tire, so it's not fair to compare it to them. The Yok A008R and RS (if
either are still availible) are full race, and probably the most
predictable I've raced on. But they probably don't have the ultimate
performance of the others, as the design is nearly 20 years old.

Have fun,
