The belts-and-pulleys continuously-variable drive was pretty innovative and
well-made. Unfortunately, DAF became known as a pensioner's car (mainly old
and handicapped people drove them) and they never recovered from that
negative image- even when they started installing Renault engines instead
of the weak 2-cyl boxers they used to make. Those cars were light and fast,
and they swapped 'cogs' like no-one else could. Pity, because it set back
development of the CVT transmissions for years.

MAC: One of the companies currently developing the CVT system is Audi. When
tested against a similar-spec slush A6, the CVT-equipped A6 comfortably
out-accelerated the other car.
