Sounds like what I had with my 4000. Starts ok, then goes downhill.
Problem turned out to be cracked rubber in the big rubber hose going from
fuel distributer to intake manifold. The cracks cause unwanted air to enter
and thus resulting in a lean mixture. Of course, the cracks where on the
bottom where you couldnt see them readily.
The engine starts fine because the "choke" injector is operating. But, after
a few seconds, that injector shuts off . . .and you get your symptoms.
I fixed my cracks with silicon rubber . . . which worked fine until I found
a used boot to replace the original.

The problem could also be air leaks from other sources . . . . check the
other rubber hoses . . .vacuum and idle air.

OK, my 85 is being tempremental again in the mornings for the first few
minutes. Last time Steve B recommended I look at the Oxs Freq Valve...
well with that being 'fixed', the idle switch being replaced, and the CO
levels being adjusted it seemed pretty happy for a while. The last
couple of days though have been a pain.

I crank, it starts RIGHT up, nice and smooth. As the tach is dropping
back down to idle, it seems to fall to 1 or 2 cylinders, VERY rough
idle, pops, spits, farts etc. There is no chance of raising the idle
with the foot... I can floor it, and it just sits there and doesnt
change. It will stall out maybe 6 or 7 times, and each time restart
perfectly and go back to idling roughly. Eventually it clears out once
it warms up, but its a pain in the butt warming up a car on 1 or 2
cylinders!
THANKS!
Bob
