[rumors of new crank needed snipped]

it's not too hard to check the spark/cam/crank timing. if that is the
problem (cam vs crank) most likely culprit would be a slipped timing
belt - perhaps due to poorly tensioned belt?

what you describe could be caused by screwed up timing but don't go
buying a crankshaft just yet!

does it still sport a catalytic converter? because if so, maybe it is
broken and clogged.

if the timings are fine, start checking "everything else"... I started a
file listing this stuff but i can't find it right now:

ground wires on intake manifold
"spare" fuse in strip next to regular fuse block
OXS functioning
temp sender for CIS
control pressure actuator
CPA current

etc etc
