Huw,
I've driven an '82 4k-4E, an '85 4ks and an '85 Jetta GLI. I'd have
to say, all in all, the GLI was the sweetest driving of all three,
with the 4ks and the GLI having identical 195/60R14 AVS Intermediates
for comparison, stock shocks, similar mileage.

The problem with the FWD models, IMHO, is the rear drum brakes. I've
always had a lot of difficulty modulating a rear drum setup when
trying to brake hard. I know that part of it is from inexperience at
threshold braking, but I think the other part is just that the front-rear
brake balance on the drum-equipped Audis just plain sucks.

I don't know about the Coupe GT, but given a choice between a 4ks and
a Jetta GLI, I'll take the GLI every time. Are the type 89 FWD models
4-wheel disc? Alexander, anyone? That may change the driving dynamics
significantly.

Taka
