A better solution would have been to call your insurance
company.  They would have sent a pro out to your home or parking
lot at work, who would have made a guaranteed repair by injecting
a plastic resin... and it wouldn't have cost you a cent.  (They'd
much rather pay the total cost of that, than buy you a new
windshield, deductible or no deductible.)

The repair would probably have been visible, no more so than your
own effort, I bet.

That depends on the state and the Ins company your using.  In california,
glass isnt covered unless your whole car is covered by collision.  In mass
glass coverage is separate. In RI its not covered.... so it really depends
on what state you live in.
