speedo problem on type 89

Hi,
When i bought my '89 90, i remarqued that the speedo/tachymeter had been 
replaced.
The problem was remarked at 51000' km (a new tachy is ordered by the audi 
dealer) but the tachymeter was changed later, at 62000' km on the clock 
(and 'distance'  was but back to zero)

I often hear about such problems on the list but what is the 'normal' 
problem; 'speed'-meter out of order ? 'distance'-meter out of order ? both 
out ? both intermittent ?
As i would like to know if my car may have more than 62000' km on the clock 
when the new tachy was installed...
