Somebody attemted to put 5.25" in my doors some time back. There is
a solid strut that comes across from the bottom of the door toward the front
of it about the middle. They realized this to late and built a box about 2"
deep, wrapped in leather to mount the speaker to. It looks like crap, but
matches the car nicely, and I can't open my hood with the door closed, but
the box does enhance the sound, especially once I put in a more powerful
speaker. The box is big enough that I can fit 6X9's if I cut it. I'm
considering it.
I put 4 way 6X9 in the rear deck. My car is the 4000 Sedan though
so it may be different. Again about 3" below the deck is another brace that
goes right across the back of the car. The old 2 way 6X9's fit in there,
but the bigger magnet and depth of the new 400W kenwoods make them stick up
out of the holes so I don't get a good seal behind the speaker. I may have
mini boxes built for them to be mounted on the deck but I will lose alot of
my rear view.
I didn't have anywhere for the amp to go in the trunk, instead I
mounted it just below the center brake light on the rear deck, but it's old
and looks like crap so I'm not worried. If you find somewhere that's good,
let me know.
As for your dash, it should have some crappy little 3" or 3.5" in
there. I can't remember what they're supposed to be, but they should be
there. If you're gonna get tweeters to, you should put them at the top of
your windsheild pillars. Its the easiest place to wire them, they project
the sound better, and don't get in the way of anything important like....
ripping your dash apart for that all important Heat exchanger, or
recirculation flap, or.... you get the idea.
Good luck! May I suggest Kenwood. I've had problems with the
Alpines in winter, and the Kenwoods are IMHO somewhat more reliable.
