Well, I've had a quick test drive of the Passat GLX, and am
(hopefully) going to take it out for 20 or so miles today for
a more thorough inspection.

As some of you have mentioned, this car is now quite a bit more
in the league of an A4/A6.

My impressions, versus the A6Q:

The interior room is very similar. This was a big issue for me,
as I feel the A4 is too small. I have become accustomed to the
room in my 100Q and my A6Q. Will not give that up.

The interior appointments are *very* nice. A totally different
look from the Audi, but I like it. It is nowhere near the cheap
plastic interiors on the lower VW models. Pretty much all the same
amenities as the A6Q, give or take a couple of details.

The exterior style is hands down better than the A6Q. Sorry, I
guess I'm the only person here who finds the new A6 offensively
ugly? No offense to any owners out there, but what was Audi thinking?
And since the Tiptronic (the ONLY option since I can't get a stick)
was not available on the last body style, I'm stuck. This in fact
was the main reason I even looked at the Passat. That plus the dealer
is two blocks away, instead of a 50 mile drive through Boston HELL.

And of course, the price. An A6Q would have been (sticker): $39K.
An A4Q 2.8 was $34-$35K. The Passat is $30-$31K. And since the
car I'm looking at is a 2000 leftover, he is offering me a VERY
attractive deal on top of that.

Lastly, this Passat is in my all time favorite color in the world:
*NOT BLACK*! :-)


I do have a question that maybe someone on the list knows the answer
to. The VW dealer mechanics didn't. Does the Passat have Servotronic
steering? The steering was very vague, the calling card of Servotronic.
There was also some question about the tires being the culprit, but
it would be nice if it were Servotronic so I could just unplug it
like I did on my A6 the day after I bought it.
