The "E" is/was the OE tire for the A4 with the sport package.  The E tire is 
of a slightly harder compound than the regular SP8000.....I guess Audi felt 
guilty selling a car shod with a tire that only would give about 25K miles of 
life.  We have E's, the original tires, on the Avant, with about 31K on the 
ticker.  It needs new tires, if only b/c the outer edges are worn due to some 
spirited driving by both me and the wife....she more than I, it's her car !!
