I used the toolkit rented from Blaufergnugen. It came with a lever that had
a blade which fit in the keyway of the crank. You jammed it under the lip
of the seal and levered it off the end of the crank. I believe it was a VAG
tool. To put seal on there was a two-piece plastic sleeve and cup. The
sleeve went over the crank, next the new, oiled seal, and finally the cup.
You use the crank bolt to push the cup against the seal over the sleeve.
When seated, the sleeve would come out fitted inside the cup.

1. the seal can be removed with a sheetrock screw and replaced with a
piece of PVC pipe (yow)
or
2. the tool I've seen here in the US actually screws into the seal and
then pulls it out, there is a tool consisting of a pair of pieces of
delrin for reinstalling.
