Hi Bill,
I just went through this.
Spec is for 2.5k @ 68F, going LOWER as temp increases.
My defective sensor read 5.5k @ 68F, and did not change with inc temp.

So, your ECU thinks the car isn't getting warm.  Consequently, it runs rich 
and mileage is lower than normal.

Get a new sensor.  It's a Bosch part, so any quality foreign part chain 
should have them.  TPCs web site has the Audi part #(I don't have it in my 
index).

5 min replacement job.  If you have the new sensor ready when you remove the 
old one, you won't lose any coolant.
