This reminds me of several time I chased what I thought were fuel related
problems only to find after carb rebuilds and injector replacements that I
had ignition related problem.

I would assume the car has points. Go there first - check/replace/clean
adjust.

It wouldn't hurt to do a quick compression test to make sure that is ok.

Don't start rebuilding your carburator just yet.

Ben
Cars & Boats all run crappy when the points or condenser and all connections
to them are not perfect!
*************

After a long time of standing the pistons don't seem to be
corroded to the cylinders.. :-))
I injected some engineoil in the spark-holes on each
cylinder (4 -pot engine, 2.0 litre, 115 hp, carburettor)
I cleaned the plugs and screwed them in again..
A freshly loaden battery attached: with the help of 'start
pilot' stuff sprayed in the carburettor-venturi and some
churning the engine ran.., drinking out of a jerrycan with
fuel, as the tank has deposits in it.. ++Yeah you'll want to drain and flush
tank - your lines too.

But: I need to half-depress the throttle to keep it running:
easing it let the engine stop..
As it doesn't seem an electrical problem (then it wouldn't
start at all) ++ not true!

BTW: on starting/running there is some backfire out of
the carburettor-venturi (I saw real flames erupting!): this
would mean the ignition is not set right??
I do have a flashlamp and revolutioncounter to regulate
the 'schliesswinkel', but to do so the engine must be
running on its own (about 950 rpm)..

+++Points - this sound just like the Boat with 350 Chevy I rebuilt Carb
after seeing I was getting spark. Problem was it just wasn't at the right
time or consistant.
