tires.
Peter,
I agree that the wider tires are more of a style thing than a handling advantage. As previously noted by another posting, drag cars have extremely wide tires, but look what happens when you need to turn one of those rockets (just watch Foxx for the next "And they walked away" car crash tv shows). Look at all the "gravity cars" that were around in the 70's (big back tires/jacked suspension+small front tires=always going downhill) and the jacked up suv/yeeps of the 80/90's - it's more "the look" over actual application (although having owned a pickup with 32" swampers, I know that the big tires are more of a mud applicator for the vehicle than designed to get you through the mud quickly-the fun is to be had in _staying_ in the mud.)
The wider tires will tend to produce more road noise as well, as the air compressed between the tire and the asphalt has to rush further to get out. I am contemplating a summer tire purchase right now for the Quattro - I think that I may choose something to go against the caitnoP tag line.
Cheers!
