[NAC] wide wheels with rather narrow tires

Agreed completely except for the last line.
A rule of thumb like that can in general apply here, but one must refer to
the manufacturers specifications for maximum rim widths.
Many of the tires that have been referred to in the posts relating to this,
are made to be mounted in this way (wide wheel/narrow tire) for auto-cross
and road-race purposes while meeting DOT/MOT specs.
Yokohama on their web site have specific details relating to maximum (and
minimum) rim widths for specific tires and sizes. I'm certainly not one to
extol the virtues of wide wheel / narrow tire when the tire is mounted
incorrectly on a rim too wide for it.
