A6 alarm module

Good afternoon,
For you '96'  A6 Q owners, do any of you know where the factory alarm module 
is located?  I have a need for a spare alarm fob and the one I have is from 
Code Alarm.  Some of you will say that I have an aftermarket alarm, but the 
car came with the factory alarm and with this fob.  Inside it is coded 8-96 
of which the car was delivered. And it works per factory instructions to 
recode another fob.
Back to my original need.  Code Alarm says the alarm module is under the 
dash, yet I can hear while doing the factory instructions, one in the trunk.
