Are your type 89's windscreen washers plugged?

If so, don't worry about trying to clean them with compressed air or a 
needle. Just buy new ones from the dealership. Non-heated washer jets, Dfl 
2.75 (US $1.10) each.

Some Audi parts prices are quite reasonable.

Replacing them is another thing, especially when yours have been in use 
since 1987 and the hoses are rather brittle.
