A few years ago, some cigarette companies planned to run a series of full
page ads in The European newspaper regarding possible anti-smoking
legislation in various cities in Europe and the UK. The first ad was a map
of London, with one tiny block outlined in black, and the block was marked
"designated smoking zone". The caption read "Is this fair?" or similar.
I immediately fired off a letter to the editor which read: "Thanks for
publishing the locations of the designated smoking zones in the various
cities of Europe and the UK. Next time I'm in Europe, I'll know which areas
to avoid."
They published the letter (!), and strangely enough, the series of ads
stopped with the first one.
My personal feeling is that anyone who wants to smoke is welcome to, it is
their decision, and I would never presume to interfere with their lives. I
do, however, object when their implementation of that decision lowers the
quality of my life. Smoke all you want, whatever you want, I just don't
want to breathe it, that's all.
(When I teach ground school, one of the things I tell my students is "Wanna
learn sky diving? Light a cigarette in my airplane!")
I'm not particularly anti-smoking - I'm just anti-smoking around me.
Best Regards,
