S2 - was Re: High Speed

after 3 years of owning an s2 ('93) and now 4 years of an rs2, my summary
would be:

1) the s2 looks great and as has been said, is very versatile. as i don't
load the rs2 above the rear seat height without a cargo restraint, there is
actually no practical difference between the s2 and the rs2 in load
carrying. i would consider the s2 to be as practical as the rs2 for a young
family for instance. the only fly in that ointment is that the s2 has a
very high load lip while the rs2 obviously has the lip at the height of the
tray.
2) the s2 has a timeless look. there is one down the road from me, and
every time i see it, i think "yeah, nice".
3) i got sick of the weak s2 brakes, and the soggy handling. no such
worries with the rs2, although the ur-quattro 20v is much better again in
the handling department, not nearly as much roll, no pitch, and more
sure-footed.
4) 6-speed s2 is a better car than the 5-speed, due to a stronger motor
(overboost), stiffer handling, and a better gearbox.
5) resale values of the s2 here in nz make it a very attractive proposition
as opposed to the various subie wrx's around. much better built than the
subaru's, stronger motors, and not bear bait.

in summary, I still miss the s2 on those days where I don't want to be
driving a station wagon.

Can 100% back that up. Driving the S2 long distances
is easy - did Zurich to Amsterdam and decided on a
whim to come back through Reim (for some champagne) -
this was only for a 3day weekend too. I think I did
around 1500miles all up. Much of it above 120mph.
