Volkswagen used a different retention system up until 1998 on passat and 99 
on other models.  The floor mats had a quick connect strap, one end would tie 
to the front seat mounting bracket in the middle, the other is attatched to 
the floor mat.  This system was used on all VW floor mats and now used by the 
Loyd mats for older VW's (back to about 85).  VW Accessory Catalogs show how 
this works if any of you have access to an older one.  New cars use the same 
system that the new Audi's due which is awesome and cosmetically better.
