Enthusiastic remarks on early 5KT

The comment on the power steering fluid is mistaken. The early cars used
ATF, not mineral oil, and the racks were a constant problem. My boss and
I did an average of one every 2 weeks for the 2 year period in which I
worked last in LA (CA). This in a shop where about 20% of our work was
on Audis. We saw numerous heater core failures, and the autoboxes had
the annoying habit of fluid swaping between the trans and diff. Probably
8 or 10 of those in 2 years. There were also common failures of the oil
coolers in those days of phosphate laden coolants. The door handles were
as bad as the later ones, and the wheel cylinders originally installed
seemed unable to take the load of the heavy cars. HTH, John
