Well, I've started instructing, and here's what I can tell you:
Prep:
Change Fluids: Coolant should be OK if changed within book specs. or every 2
years (newer Audis can actually go longer). Track driving is very stressful
on the cooling and oiling systems, unlike Autocross. All of my customers run
synthetic anyhow, but it DOES help keep things cool. Make sure it's got
under 1000 miles on it.
Brakes: If they're under 1/2 thickness of new, replace them. It's not
unusual to go through 1/2 of the brake pads in a weekend. If you have
aftermarket, they'll cool and stop better, and will last longer, in general.
My Stoptech brakes lasted 2 track events (last one being instructors only,
and a LOT of open track time... like 45 min at a time were my runs before I
needed a break). After that about 5000 miles and I still have pad left.
I'll change in spring before first event.
Interior: Just like auto-x: Nothing loose at ALL. Clean EVERYTHING out.
No floor mats, nothing in the glove box, etc.
Helmet: I sell Bell, but any SA (NOT M, MUST BE SA rated) helmet will
qualify. SA 95 or newer (SA 00 is out now). A lot prefer the open faced
helmets because they're cooler.
Tire Pressure: Good gauge, and I sell those infrared thermometers. The price
is coming down on them drastically, and are really great for checking tire
temps quickly. Starting point will be about 5 PSI above what is recommended
in the manual. This will translate into most Quattros to be about 38 PSI
cold and about 46 PSI "hot."
Well, one last item. Comfortable shoes that you can easily heel-toe shift
in, or at least can "feel" the pedals. My cross training sneaks have large
soles which insulate and can easily "catch" on a pedal. I wear simpson shoes
at the track.
As far as clothing, that depends on the club. In general, no synthetic
fibers, and long pants. I wear jeans and a polo shirt normally. For PCA
events, they require long sleeves on top, too. Long sleeve t-shirts pass
here.
Well, I hope I've helped!
