So just how do I tell if an auto is leaking fluids internally?

First a big thank you to all who responded regarding the in and outs of the
early eighties 5kt with auto tranny.  I could not reach an agreeable sum
with owner so I am also considering the 84 to 88 models ( turbo or non
turbo ) as well.  A couple of lower priced possibilities around but unless
the tranny has been rebuilt, how do I tell if the dreaded seal is allowing
fluids to leak in the wrong direction?  I have owned a couple of these cars
with 5 speeds so am aware of the hydraulic and climate control gremlins, but
still unsure of auto tranny complications.
