This is a heck of a change if it's true. All the groups I've run with
(BMWCCA, PCA, CART, EMRA, Corvair club...) have allowed M rated
helmets.

Again, if the driver plans do "track" events (DE, etc), no car club
that I 
know of allows M rated helmets (this wasn't true last year, but is
for 2001). 
Check with your local clubs which host events. "M" rated helmets are
good 
enough for SCCA Solo-1 and Solo-2.
