Oh yeah, it can be done: witness eS2 I (Brandon Hull's with a 3B 200tq
engine from a '91 200tq)and eS2 II (mine, in which we rebuilt a 3B engine).
For more info check out the work Darin Nederhoff did to present my car at
www.s-cars.org under the Features section entitled "S2 Amerika." It's also
in the S2 registry on that site. As you can see, the car was almost
entirely rebuilt-restored-upgraded mechanically. Not an inexpensive
proposition, but one I undertook because I wanted what is basically a new S2
coupe. In addition, there is Dean Treadway's lago blue wild machine in the
Bay Area. He's way beyond Brandon and me with his conversions of a CQ and
Urq -- lot of his work is done by 2Bennett
For really interesting/valuable technical info in considerable detail with
pics, use the link to the ersatz S2 site that is noted in the feature on my
car. That is Brandon Hull's site on his conversion from cq to S2. He did a
lot of work himself. The major work on both cars was done at AJP Tuning in
Bristol, PA near Philly. Brandon lives nearby in Princeton NJ; I live in
St. Paul, Minnesota. Brandon can be reached at
www.brandon at cardinalventures.com. My suspension, handling, exhaust was done
by Anderson Motorsport in Minnesota.
There are some track pictures of both Brandon's and my car (both are pearl
with S2 badges) under events at the QCUSA website. (in particular, check
out Mid-Ohio 2000, especially the concours in the parking lot and the lineup
of CQ's under the Mid-Ohio entrance -- Brandon's is the one with the right
headlight missing -- he took it out to feed more air directly to the turbo).
Also, 3-4 pics of my car are part of a report on an ice event held here in
the frozen north last Sunday. The link is:

HTH, thanks for the comment, Todd!
