"I have that same 3 a.m. driving experience in my resume --
albeit with a
different ending.
Dad's Toyota had a very distinct sounding starter and thus,
merely rolling
it into the street wasn't prudent (hah -- as if *anything*
about sneaking
out for a drive at age 14 is prudent). Opted instead for
pushing it down
the block a bit before starting it.
Trouble was, the neighbor across the street didn't see two
miscreants
emerging from my garden level bedroom window -- he only saw
two miscreants
pushing Dad's car down the street before taking off.
I must admit this wasn't the first time I'd kept Dad's car
warm at night,
and the ritual was always the same. Out to cruise chicks
(hehe) at 3 a.m.
in our sleepy residential district. Our house was on a
corner lot.....God, I hate to snip the
rest......ROTHFLMAOHAAHAAAAHOHOOO!
I too lived on a corner lot, except the front of the house
was on one street, and the garage driveway entered (and
EXITED ssoooo many times) from the street running
perpendicular. Said driveway street was a hill, with the
driveway centered and serviced by streets above and below.
Nearly a perfect situation except the parent's bedroom was
right above the driveway. Sneak out mode was as thus:
-Wait by my closed bedroom door, approximately a half an
hour after I knew my parents had gone to bed.
- Wait for the grandfather clock at the bottom of the stairs
to begin booming Westminster's finest chimes (to cover the
noise of opening and closing my bedroom door, and the creak
in the third and eighth steps).
- Exit the house from the door furthest from my parents
room, doorknob and hinges lubricated to complete silence
with regular doses of WD40.
- Walk around house, get in car (1978 VW Rabbit), push out
of driveway with left foot which was easy as the driveway
had a little slope to the street. Backing slightly left
gained enough speed down the hill to snap right, and then
turn left to coast down street rolling forward.
- Ignition on, compression start a block away.
- Cruise chicks until THEY had to go home, and then,
ofttimes AT their home.
- Leave for my house, coasting into my driveway from the
street above, engine having been killed a block prior.
- Enter house, wait for the sound of England, and go to bed.
I am astounded that I never got caught, and I did this well
over a hundred times. The closest call was when my Dad, who
kept meticulous records, was perplexed by how he managed 65
mpg on one particular tankful. Oops. Put back in more than I
used.
I have heard that there are paybacks for the transgressions
of childhood, once one becomes an adult. They are true. I
have three girls.
Sorry for the waste of BW, the memories overwhelmed me.
