I got the message below from Uwe Ross - I've emailed the guy, offered to
help and told him of the list.
Consumption signal sounds like a throttle position sensor to me...

Hi Dave,

I though you might be interested to know that I had a 1990 V8 Quattro
here yesterday. Local guy owns one and called me up to ask if VAG-COM
would work with it, and was specifically interested in communicating
with the transmission becuase it's stuck in "limp mode". I told him
I had one customer in Florida with the same car, but that this customer
had been having some difficulties "talking" to the tranny. Since he's
local, I suggested he bring the car by and we'd see if the system worked

and find out exactly what it could and couldn't do on his car.

Anyway, we had no problems communicating with either his engine or
transmission from either my desktop or laptop PC's. We checked Fault
Codes, did Output Tests, and looked at the Measuring Blocks and Single
Readings (engine only, tranny doesn't seem to support that function).

Found only one signifigant DTC in the TCU:

  00549 -- Consumption Signal
       (Short to ground)

I think this indicates no comunication between the ECU and the TCU..

When doing output tests on his tranny, we could hear Solenoids 1-3, but
not 4 or 5. All the relays made appropriate clicking noises as well.

Since I'd never seen one of these cars before, I can't really help this
guy any further. His local independent Audi guy is pretty much at a
loss, and the local dealers don't particularly want to work on the car
either.
