I had this on my '89 100Q, had a DEVIL of a time tracking it down.
It turned out to be the dashpot spring inside the throttle body.
Mechanic just removed the plunger and spring, I never noticed the
difference in 100K+ of driving.
On my car, often it would idle fine. Sometimes it would idle at
2500 or so RPM. If it did that, tapping the gas would "sometimes"
reset it back to 800, sometimes not. Sound like your problem?
