On the 5K's when this happens the car idles low, then dies when the kitty
guts spew out and get stuck in the later pipe bends.   Drove around with
mine disintegrating for months, would die on hard corners, could hear the
stuff moving around the exhaust.  When the car died altogether, all I had
with me was a set of vice grips, which I used to remove the O2 sensor so
she could breath to get us home.  Patient was the '84 5KS.  
Another lister who had nothing but a tire iron when the kitty guts
clogged his exhaust far from home, used the tire iron to break off the
"sniffer" tube on the manifold to get his patient breathing.
