Wheel spacers

I spent an enjoyable afternoon talking with another lister, looking over his
84 URQ with 8" Ronals. Beautiful car! Those wheels transform the car from
good to great!
There are 2 aspects to the "transformation," the concave design, and the wide
stance appearance, read full wheel arches.
During the conversation, wheel spacers came up as a means of filling the
wheel arches without buying new wheels. I had not followed previous threads
on this, as I hadn't considered using them. Searching the archives, I found
several references to spacers, with values at around $50 US each.
Is that the going value? I have 3 sets of 6x15 wheels (2 Ronals, 1 BBS), and
have a hard time justifying another set of wheels, but at $200.00, spacers
are not a "less expensive" alternative.
It appears that spacers are for fitting wider tires, and not for a budgetary
method of achieving fuller wheel wells, and a wider stance.
It's great to finally start thinking about appearance on the FrankenQuattro
(brought back from the dead with parts borrowed from the graves of others).
Any input greatly appreciated.
Dennis
