I don't know if everyone appreciates that the penultimate Ducati bevel drive
was a Desmodromic cylinder head whereby the valves were mechanically opened
and closed rather than opened and sprung shut. Unique in design and very
distinctive in performance and sound.

Everyone appears to have valid observations. The bevel gear drive on a
Ducati was a work of art. Like the 4 cam Porsche Carrera engines, I'm
sure a
significant amount of HP was required to turn the shafts and gears and the
belts are definitely cheaper and quieter alternative. Also the timing
procedure was elaborate. The new Porsches with the variocam seemed to
have
solved the problem with a reliable chain and a tensioning system that also
optimizes the HP & torque curves. Too bad they are out my price range.
