I had a moment on the traffic island at the bottom of the A57 in
Sheffield late last week. Anyone who's seen the chariot race in Ben Hur
will know the general picture - thirteen lanes of heavy traffic enter
and only nine leave. I came up the hill and hit the island just as
there was no traffic to the right - the bus was in third, 40mph, 1.8bar
showing.
And then this idiot pulled out of a lane I was crossing. Braking was
impossible and I was headed straight for his driver's door. I just kept
the right foot where it was and pulled hard right and hard left to go
round the FRONT of his car. After a dose of 'the bang that never came'
on the back, I was left with staying in the outside lane of the A57 and
not demolishing the centre barrier. I've never done a maneouvre like
that in a wagon before - I wouldn't have been surprised at the
ur-quattro succeeding, but the bus did it just as well. Perhaps the
new 7Js helped a bit.
