4KCSQ: diffs both locking??

I've got an '86 4KCSQ, and I have a bit of a question: How can I tell if
my center diff is locking? If I turn the diff lock knob to either the 1 or
the 2 position, the green LED for the center diff doesn't light up. In the
2 position the green LED for the rear diff DOES light up, and the rear one
is certainly working because on dry pavement with it on I get a nice
chattering as I go around corners. :)

How exactly do the diffs work on these cars? My understanding is that the
first position on the switch locks the center, so I'm getting a 50/50
fore/aft splight, and the second position locks the rear one AND the front
one, so that I get a 25/25 split side to side in the rear, and a 50/50
split fore/aft. Does this mean that the front diff is still of the open
variety?

Also, do the diffs on this car automatically open up after you reach a
certain speed, or do they stay locked down at all speed when the switch is
thrown?
