New T-belt transforms car! And, AC removal benefits.

I replaced the badly cracked 145k timing belt on my 4kq and much to my
shock...the car is vastly faster with a real midrange. The previous belt
lined up just fine at all the cam and crank markings, so I assume it wasn't
wrong to begin with.
By transformation I mean the car has discernable mid-range acceleration and
is a whole gear faster on some hills (I don't have to downshift).
Would slop in the old belt be enough to mess the relationship in the cam
timing?
The AC removal I also did has made the car much better handling. I'm always
shocked how the little thing make such a difference in this car. I found
that Audi in it's infinite wisdom bored the AC mounts right into the block,
so that the holes leaked oil when removed. Have to get some stubby bolts and
sealant now.
