Because I could not find detailed procedure for dash removal I decided
to summarize it in writeup below after I finished with it. I had to take
a class at junk yard to be confident. :-)
200/100 89 91 dash removal procedure.
- remove dash side panels
- remove under dash panel on the driver side (some cars have storage
shelf in it)
- remove gloves box (there are 2 types of boxes: drop off and slide
out. The later one has a trick: 2 screws which are accessed through
wholes are not needed to be removed. Just slacken them
enough and remove box moving it towards the passenger door and then
toward the rear)
- remove steering wheel switches top cover (2 screws underneath of
switch lower cover)
- remove the trim at the bottom of instrument cluster (3 screws)
- remove screws holding central panel to be able to move a little toward
the back
- now you should have all wooden trim fastening exposed (allen screws).
Remove wooden trim. Be careful because it is fragile. Two or one
screw behind steering wheel switches is hard to remove unless you have
better tools then I have or you remove steering wheel and pooled
switches back. So, I removed steering wheel (Caution: air bag equipped
cars have
red connector under right side panel of the central console. It MUST be
disconnected before removing air bag. DO NOT turn on ignition while air
bag is removed.).
- remove 2 allen 4mm bolts which hold instrument cluster (at the
bottom).
- Now you have all allen screws holding dash accessible. 2 screws are on
both sides, 2 on the front panel, one screw under each speaker
grill (pry it with thin screwdriver), one s crew under windshield
defroster grill. You dont have to remove defroster grill (caution:
easy to break). Use a mirror to locate the screw (on the middle) and to
aim the wrench.
Thats all. Slide the dash out. Total 1 hour of labor for first time.
You will need star shaped wrench if you remove steering wheel equipped
with an air bag. When assembling back tighten them to 6 n/m.
