I disagree.  I had a gutted cat on my 1990 CQ (cleanly gutted) and I
figured much the same to your reasoning so I replaced it with a straight
pipe.  After that, the CQ sounded even worse.  The performance was
unaffected.  So I think you should just cleanly gut the cat and leave it
in.
