A6 bumper catching on curb

I am a 1999 A6 Quattro owner new to this list with a question that may
have already been addressed but it is a new situation to me.  I recently
had the front bumper cover pulled out from the body after getting hung up
on what looked like a normal curb to me.  I always take my car to the
same place I bought it but the service people said they have never seen
something like that before.  They recommended I take it to the collision
repair shop that does all of the work for the new car department.  The
person doing the estimate says they see it a lot with Audis and VW
Passats.  I spoke with one of my neighbors who owns a 1999 A6 Avant and
found oput his wife had also had the same thing happen to their front
bumper.  

Audi Client Relations says that it is not a warranty issue and the
regional Audi rep says that it is not a problem. But I have to say that I
have never had this happen to me with any car I have ever had before,
including a 4000S I had for a few years.  Has any one else experienced 
Is this a common occurance with the A6?  Does every one just take it as
an insurance claim and not report it to Audi?
