K04 knowledge to pass on for those with a 1.8T A4

Well, I installed a K04 in my '97 A4 1.8Tq a little
while ago and was having quite a few drivability
issues with it.
Low boost, hesitation, sometimes boost surging in the
higher gears at WOT if I was below 3500 rpm, etc.
No codes were ever thrown, the boost dump valve and
wastegate solenoid were fine, no boost leaks to be
found anywhere. I was truly mistified. I noticed
that the t-body wasn't reading full throttle, so I
swapped a friends on, no dice.
Turns out that Audi changed the mass air meter
sometime in late '98, and it shares a reference ground
signal with the t-body. Once I grabbed a "new" MAF,
everything was fine. BTW, it's the same MAF that the
Golf/Jetta's use. I paid $75 for mine from a
junkyard.
It's important to note that I was having boost surging
with the stock K03 turbo and a chip. So if you're car
is surging or hesitating and your MAF ends in the
Bosch # 112, go ahead and swap in the new one that
ends in 117 and see if that solves your problem.
