NG headwork - carbon deposits

Greetings all,

I'm finally able to start on the NG 2.3l work. I have removed the head and
am in the process of cleaning it up, a little port and polish, and will be
installing some Autotech springs and new lifters to support the 272 cam.

Several of the valves have some carbon deposits which are as hard as glass.
Is this worth the trouble to remove and if so how, or is it just best
leaving well enough alone. I was able to remove the heavy deposits, but
some of the valves have a layer of shiny black glasslike material, which
would seem to me to be not worth the trouble to remove. Opinions?

Any tips on porting or polishing for this specific head would be
appreciated. I understand from previous posts, that the valve seats don't
need to be unshrouded. I'm not looking to remove much material, only to
clean up some casting imperfections, mostly on the manifold side.

However, if there is some area that is significant that I should address,
I'd appreciate knowing about it.

Well, back to the garage. More later.

TIA.

Ben
