The infamous clamshell gas pedal failure

Ok, I've been running around with a broken gas pedal now for a month
and I'm sick of it. 

I'm not even going to launch into a "why did they design it that way"
tirade, you can all thank me later.

Before I go and purchase a new clamshell pedal, with it's inherent
design flaws, I was wondering if there was any reason why I couldn't
simply purchase an aftermarket pedal? Surely, there has to be a lister
who has thrown their pedal cover away and refit some lovely drilled
aluminum number in it's place. Opinions?
