Alan,,

I have been doing a 2.3l/NG upgrade myself, and am documenting the project
at:
http://www.homestead.com/Ben_Swann/myaudi.html

I have bore and stroke and other pertinant details there.

I have a 2.3lblock (no head) if you need, as well as some other misc. parts.
I live in Annapolis, MD. I also have a couple of KX 2.2l motors complete,
and one shortblock. I can let any of these go for next to nothing,
certainly way less than a junkyard would charge, so if you are anywhere
nearby you may want to make the trip.

I may also have a line on a complete 2.3l setup from a wagon I may get as a
parts car, but not sure.

Your best bet is to match the NG/NF head to a 2.3 block. My understanding
is there is very little if any difference between the NG and NF heads. The
motors differ mostly in the setup based on the car they were in, so things
like manifolds, FI system orientation, etc. will vary on if they came out of
a 80, 90, 100, or GT coupe.

You definately need the intake manifold for the head, as the injectors are
installed in the manifold rather than the head.

I was going to lighten the flywheel on my NG motor, but opted instead to go
with the complete 200 setup. You should do one or the other, and should be
able to get the flywheel lightened for well under $100.

If you dont want to swap out the complete ignition and fuel injection system
when you do this swap, IMO you may well be wasting your time, as a major
part of the performance gains are to be had from the CISIII with knock
sensor and more aggressive timing map. There is another alternative I have
a link to on my site, which is to add the knock sensor IGN without ripping
everything else out.

I am in the process of porting and polishing the NG head, Elgin 272 Cam
install, and manifold matching, and hope to have some more pictures up in
the near future.

You can get some quick and dirty gains from the 2.2 setup with freer
exhaust, a 264 cam and advanced timing as I did on my first iteration of
project GTQ.

Best Regards and keep us appraised of how it is going.

Ben

[well, the short block i found in a scrapyard can be mine for £50 which im
happy about, the only problem is i dont know if its 2226 or 2309cc, can
anyone tell me the bore sizes?
after phoning around for a head im looking at £100 or there abouts for the
head, camshaft, valves and manifolds. but i was told there maybe
complications fitting it to any other block other than the 2309, any further
info? also the only difference between the heads (nf/ng) is an additional
vacuum point (on the manifold i guess). so if all goes well i'll buy the
short block this month, strip and rebuild, also cut the front out of the
coupe and refit with brackets, any information on this would be very useful.
next month ill buy the head and manifold(s), gas flow and polish to the best
of my abilities, and hopefully the following month fit the new engine. Huw,
waht where you saying about injector lines? can i use the ng/nf fuel lines
and injectors and fit that to the cis fuel distributor? if not ym other
option is to make some bosses and fit them to my current manifold, hopefully
in the bend at the bottom. i dont want to refit the car with electronic
controlled stuff as that, imho, is far too much work for no real gains, i
dont think the problem with detonation isnt so bad here because we get good
octane fuel. also whos lightened there flywheel? where did you remove the
material from and did it require re-balancing? thanx for all the answers]
