voltage light on dash acting up

I will let the group know the results when I actually get my butt in gear
and take a look at this little problem. I haven't been driving the car much
in the last two weeks. The weather has been so good I pulled the bike out
and commuted to work that way. Very cheap!

Anyway, if I fix it or break it, I'll be sure to mention it on the list..

Gordie,
First check the voltage across the battery (engine ideling), should be above
battery voltage (when engine is off!)
Second add a couple of acc. lights and blower and check the voltage across
the battery, with the engine above 1,100 RPM
If not OK (should be above 13Volts), check the alt. belt for tension.

Let us know the results,
Avi

Subject: voltage light on dash acting up

It's been some time since I posted to this list. I think I had all I could
take of my car and just decided to avoid it for awhile.

Anyway....

So I just noticed the other day that the voltage warning light on my
instrument panel is dimly lit at night. Well, I guess it's always dimly lit,
but it looks fairly bright at night; I don't notice it in the day. I checked
the battery with a hydrometer and all the cells are good, but I can't
imagine this light is dimly lighting itself for no reason.

I'm thinking alternator here. I have heard that on some cars (GM comes to
mind) the light will faintly light up when the voltage regulator is starting
to go. Could this hold true for the '82 Coupe? Any insight into this matter
would be appreciated, especially those of the btdt variety.
