Usually? Damn near always.

These days I slice the old lines through before starting and take the oil cooler to the bench.  With care, you can grind away the old nut until you _JUST_ see the threads showing through.  Do it on both sides, 180 degrees apart.  Then, with a nice sharp cold chisel, open up one side and take it off.

The body of the oil cooler is factor n weaker than it needs to be to take the undoing torque.
