turning off check engine light

  I found out how to turn the chk eng light off on a 98 2.8a4q.  I have no 
idea if it works on other years/cars.  I may have some extra steps in here 
but it works.
  Anyways,  With the car off, hold the right gauge cluster button in.  
Mileage should light up - Hold the button in the whole time.  wait 5 sec.  
Turn the key to the first click, 5sec later next click-5sec, turn to start 
position w/clutch out for 5sec, push clutch in, after its running let go of 
the button.
