Sorry he wouldn't do it, just gave you some reasons why.  Personally, I'm a 
tech, so I don't care.  The delay in getting the part affects me, but the 
owner is the one who loses money on the bring your own part deal.  Chances 
are your mechanic is also the owner, if he still actually does work on cars, 
so it hits him both ways.  The problem is finding a reputable shop who will 
do it.  We are more likely to do it in slow times, but won't consider it 
when busy.
To answer Kneale, that price sounds about the same as the shop I work at.  
If I was doing it at home, the rack could be from anywhere you like.  I'd 
probably want 250 plus fluid to do it.  I don't know how that price compares 
for you, but I gague it on shops around here.
I could go into more detail about why I may sound high for a "moonlight" 
mechanic and the fun tale of the last car we let a guy bring his own parts 
for, but thats for another thread. FYI-its been over a year, two fuel tanks 
and three pumps....the car still sits on our lot.  We have filed for title 
to the car, and will send it to Audi heaven shortly.
