Hi Chris. I had the one on my 87 5kq all apart and there are no
plastic gears. On mine the two metal gears upstream from the final
drive stripped. This stands to reason as at -20C the bowden cable
operating the flaps would get pretty sticky. I have a clock fixer
friend who said he would make up the gears, but realizing the work
involved and friendship, I declined. Once you have it apart you will
realize it's a piece of junk. I ended up getting a replacement from a
friendly lister who got a 5ktq just to stick the turbo engine in his
anemic 4kq (thanks again Marc! Still works! :) If you do try to fix
it, keep in mind there is a potentiometer on an output shaft that has
to be adjusted properly or you'll strip the gears on the one you just
fixed! I think...
Best regards from one audifanatic.
Geo
