what effect does strut-tower brace have on '88 80 Quattro? (a nd other stuff)

I've been using well-worn P7000's Summers with good success on the track.
Last time out, as far as I could tell, only two Audi's were turning faster
lap times, by about 2 seconds, and they were both on fat Hoosiers. The
P7000's have never chunked, but they are very soft - I get maybe 10k miles
out of them in combined street/track use.

I've done a lot to the car's suspension since I trashed the Kumho's,
including a big rear swaybar with reinforced subframe, etc. I'm going to try
to fit some 225/45-17 Kumho's and run them with -1.5 deg camber in the
front, as well as maybe a bit of toe-out. If I can get 10 full track days
out of the Kumho's, I'll be very happy.

Yup, over driving. In addition, as you were melting hte tires, you were
actually going slower, as all of the cars energy (okay, okay, my mom said
not to exaggerate, so, "a lot of") is going into melting the tires.
Proper camber and technique, lowering, stiffer springs and rear sway
should help this. I typically run at least 2 seasons on a Competition
tire, where as a street equivalent would have chunked to death.
