4kq gearshift shaft problems

Hello List,

Does anyone have any experience with realigning the gearshift shaft on an 016 transmission?  When I replaced the vacuum servo center diff. lock actuator on my '85 4kq, I inadvertently removed the gearshift shaft retaining plate.  I didn't know the plate was removed, so I attempted to drive the car but found it unable to shift.  I reinstalled the plate, but the symptoms did not change.  Now, the transmission itself remains in neutral regardless of shifter position, while the shifter itself is stuck to the left and can only move fore and aft, not left or right.  I believe the gearshift shaft needs to slide towards the left (drivers) side from its current position in order to properly engage all gears, but I haven't been able to move it.  Any ideas on how to fix this problem are greatly appreciated.
